2026 Sean Runyan Athlete of the Year: Eli Johnson
Every year, Adaptive Sports Iowa remembers and honors the memory of Sean Runyan through our Athlete of the Year award. Sean and his family’s perseverance led Iowa into becoming a trailblazer for Adaptive Sports, and his memory lives on through this award, and through Adaptive Sports Iowa.
Eli Johnson, a recent graduate from Bedford High School, was born with Spina Bifida. The challenges brought on from the condition make activity difficult for most, but not for Eli. Working on his family farm, showing sheep with the Bedford FFA Chapter, and annually at the Iowa State Fair, and juggling basketball cross country, and track practices, Eli made sure to stay busy and active throughout his high school career. Just a few of his athletic accomplishments include State Championships in Cross Country for 4 consecutive years, shot put, and twice in the 800 meters.
Eli’s many nominators commend his resilience, heart, kindness, and work ethic. While Eli is continuing his education at Southwest Minnesota State University was unable to accept the award at the ISF reception, his family was there on his behalf to accept. Adaptive Sports Iowa is honored to present the 2026 Sean Runyan Athlete of the Year award to Eli Johnson!
